Job Summary

Responsible for tutoring individuals and/or small groups of students who are enrolled in American Sign Language courses for credit or non-credit at SLCC

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1. Converse in American Sign Language with ASL & ASL/English Interpreting students in a one-on-one setting.
2. Tutor ASL & Interpreting students in the proper use of ASL signs, classifiers, and grammar in 30-60 minute sessions.
3. Tutor ASL 1010 & 1020 students in a small group setting during weekly ASL lab sessions.
4. Maintain a record of student attendance at lab sessions.
5. Maintain a schedule of availability using the online language lab tutor scheduling system.
6. Attend training meetings as directed by the ASL/I Specialist I.
7. Attend ASL club meetings and activities to converse with ASL students, when possible.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Native user of ASL
2. ASL teaching experience
3. Previous work as an ASL tutor
4. Good computer skills

Minimum Qualifications

1. High-school Diploma or GED
2. Native or near-native ASL proficiency

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Native or near native fluency in ASL and English, familiar with ASL Deaf culture norms and rules, and basic computer skills.

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.
