Job Summary

Assists the New Student Orientation Coordinator and First-Year Experience staff with their efforts to increase the access and success of new Salt Lake Community College students.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Participate as a team member of the First-Year Experience (FYE) office by:

A. Presenting information about SLCC to large and small groups of students during FYE events, specifically QuickConnect orientations.

B. Informing new students and their families of campus resources and services.

C. Leading tours of multiple SLCC campuses for new students and their families, and new SLCC employees.

D. Answering questions and directing new students in person, via email, and over the phone.

E. Helping new students register for classes, and be ready for the start of each semester.

F. Leading projects on behalf of the department.

G. Participating in event planning, preparation, and execution.

H. Assisting other Student Affairs departments such as Academic Advising, International Student Services, Admissions, and Student Life and Leadership with special events and outreach activities.

I. Participating in other institutional activities and duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

Orientation Leaders must:

A. Motivate and excite new students.

B. Create a welcoming environment for new students and their families.

C. Articulate the purpose of SLCC’s general education classes and teach new students how to register for these classes.

D. Feel comfortable using the SLCC Catalog, DegreeWorks, CANVAS, and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook platforms.

E. Use Banner to review new student’s admissions information, review registration holds, and gather student data.

F. Be punctual and dependable.

G. Participate in ongoing professional development sessions, and trainings.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will go to candidates who are:

A. Bilingual.

B. Demonstrate strong public speaking skills.

C. Professional in manner and appearance.

D. Are involved or familiar with SLCC clubs and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a current SLCC student with a minimum 2.5 GPA who is maintaining at least 9 credits per semester

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Candidates should possess the ability to:

A. Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals

B. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, cultural competencies, and sensibilities

D. Work collaboratively with other office staff, student organizations, a variety of campus departments and community personnel

E. Organize, process and apply large amounts of information accurately

F. Learn the requirements of SLCC departments, majors, schools, programs and degree options, as well as SLCC resources and procedures (e.g., application, registration, catalog, schedule)

G. Work well under pressure and function independently with integrity under minimal supervision

H. Work a flexible schedule which may include mornings, evenings, and weekends

I. Utilize basic computer operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SLCC’s student information system (i.e., Banner)

J. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.
