Job Summary

Neighborhood House is a community partner of Salt Lake Community College’s Thayne Center for Service and Learning. The Thayne Center for Service & Learning provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community. Though the position will be a direct placement at the Neighborhood House, the Thayne Center for Service and Learning will administer the orientation, enrollment and exit from the Community Work Study program and will act as on-campus supervisor.

The mission of Neighborhood House is to provide quality, affordable day care and support services to children and adults based on their ability to pay. The role of the Outreach Specialist is to support the Community Engagement Coordinator in effective implementation of the Volunteer Program and community outreach.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

- Assist in Volunteer Program implementation at Neighborhood House including outreach,
recruitment, orientation, training, placement and recognition for volunteers.

- Interact with several different types of volunteers – including individual volunteers, church/school volunteer groups, and volunteers for special events.

- Aid in the development and distribution of outreach materials and information through a variety of media including print materials, email campaigns, and social media.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

- Assist in the facilitation of program-based events through volunteer recruitment and
coordination.

- Conduct data entry to accurately report and present data on volunteers and program events.

- Assist with large service events for 50+ volunteers working at one time, and corporate groups.

- Attend community outreach events as a representative of Neighborhood House.

- Assist with the intake and organization of in-kind donations such as books, school supplies, and clothing.

Preferred Qualifications

The Neighborhood House is a tier three community partner of Salt Lake Community College’s Thayne Center for Service and Learning. Minimum Qualifications

- Must have a SLCC Federal Work-Study Award
- Must work at least 4 hours and no more than 20 hours a week.
- Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.
- Must have basic computer skills
- Must pass a background check.
- Attend all Thayne Center orientations and trainings related to this program.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Enthusiastic communicator with excellent writing and verbal skills.

- Energetic with ability to communicate with diverse populations through a variety of media.

- Experience with graphic design, email campaigns, and social media.

- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud preferred.

- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and evenings.

- Must be able to pass a background check.

- Work independently and effectively in multiple site settings.

- Spanish language skills beneficial.

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.
