Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College seeks to attract an active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber, skilled in the scholarship of teaching, discovery, application and integration of knowledge. The School of Arts, Communication & Media, located in the state-of-the-art Center for Arts and Media at South City Campus, offers a diverse array of disciplines and programs that engage and inspire all Salt Lake Community College students. The convergence of talent among students, faculty and staff produces a quality educational experience unmatched by any other two-year college.

Under supervision of the Associate Dean, the successful candidate will teach a wide variety of visual communication, media production, or communication studies courses, as well as fulfill committee and related tasks as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1. Develop, teach and coordinate face-to-face and online instruction across various communication courses, in visual communication, digital media technology, news media.
2. Utilize diverse methodologies, rigorous assessment and consistent course content.
3. Participate in curriculum development, textbook selection, and course and program assessment as needed.
4. Provide students with clear assignment descriptions and grading criteria.
5. Respond with appropriate and timely feedback regarding assignments and quizzes.
6. Assess and maintain accurate and current student performance records.
8. Demonstrate commitment to professional development and commitment to making significant contributions to the Communication Department, in addition to teaching a full class load.
9. Attend regularly scheduled meetings and workshops.
10. Advise students on their academic progress and program requirements.
11. Work closely with the Student Media Center to coordinate curriculum and practicum opportunities for students.
12. Maintain a supportive attitude toward work, students, colleagues, and administration.
13. Accept other duties as assigned.

3. Serve on Department, School, and/or College committees as needed to assist in policy development, curriculum development, procedures, or other matters that benefit the Department, School, and/or College.
4. Work collaboratively with faculty in other disciplines.

8. Maintain a minimum of 5 hours of regularly scheduled office/consultation hours.

Position may require travel to multiple SLCC locations.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Successful and paid experience in teaching a variety of communication classes at the community college level, in visual communication, digital media technology, news media, social media, journalism, and public relations.
2. Record of successful and paid experience with curriculum development of communication courses.
3. Record of successful and paid experience teaching online classes, and working in online educational platforms.
4. Record of successful and paid experience with supervising and/or advising students.
5. Record of successful and paid experience on academic committees.
6. Professional experience in visual communication, journalism, social media, digital media integration, and/or layout and design.
7. Strong working knowledge of the Adobe Master Suite (specifically Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Audition, Premiere and InDesign).
8. Applicable certifications in Photoshop, Premiere, etc.
9. Experience working with unique communities (for example, autism spectrum, differently-abled, aged, etc.)
10. Experience working in a community college environment.
11. Demonstrated ability to maintain and supervise Center for Arts and Media communication area facilities.
12. Demonstrated ability to select equipment for upgrades and replacement.
13. Demonstrated ability to supervise Student Media Center productions in radio, television, etc.
14. Ability to help promote SLCC and the Media Studies & Journalism program at on-campus and off-campus recruiting events.
15. Demonstrated experience with community engagement.
16. Demonstrated commitment to improving access to, and retention in, higher education for students from communities traditionally under-represented in higher education.
17. Demonstrated experience in multicultural teaching practices.
18. Demonstrated experience teaching courses with an emphasis on cultural and ethnic diversity.
19. Bilingual.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Visual Communication, or related field from an accredited college or university.
2. Demonstrated ability teaching students in communication subjects, such as visual communication, journalism, news media, digital storytelling, or similar hands-on production.
A record of successful teaching in the discipline on the college/university level.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Deep knowledge of discipline area.

2. Effectively communicate complex and relevant educational materials.

3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of current and historical mass media and media industry trends, with the ability to incorporate a progressive mass media workflow into course curriculum.

4. Show distinctive promise as an educator in the Communication Department.

5.Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College. The ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.

6. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to establish positive working relationships with faculty and staff.

7. Ability to successfully collaborate with faculty in other disciplines, including speech communication, film, music, etc.

8. Provide leadership and outreach to area high schools, colleges and universities,
community organizations and professionals, in order to build and maintain community and educational connections and partnerships.
