Job Summary

Salt Lake County Youth Services holds afterschool programs in Kearns, West Valley City and Magna, serving over 3,000 students each year. The Afterschool Programs facilitate enrichment and academic activities as well as provide a safe, nurturing, and educational environment that encourages youth to become active and productive community members.

Salt Lake County Youth Services is a tier three community partner of Salt Lake Community College’s Thayne Center for Service and Learning. The Thayne Center for Service & Learning provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community. Though the position will be a direct placement at the Salt Lake County Youth Services, the Thayne Center for Service and Learning will administer the orientation, enrollment and exit from the Community Work Study program and will act as on-campus supervisor.

The Volunteer Specialist will assist after-school program staff with recruiting, orienting, training, and retaining volunteers. Although this position does not involve interacting with clients directly, the chosen candidate will contribute to building capacity and support for teammates as they recruit volunteers and help fill in staffing gaps.

Minimum Qualifications

- Must have a SLCC Federal Work-Study Award
- Must work 16-20 hours a week during the semester.
- Must pass a background check.
- Attend all Thayne Center orientations and trainings related to this program.
- Week day business hours/somewhat flexible (T-TH preferred)
- Reliable Transportation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Proficient in English
- Proficient in basic Microsoft Office programs
- Self-motivated
- Works well with people/volunteers
- Experience working with youth preferred
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Organized
- Ability to work independently in self-guided environment

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.

Work Study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work Study Program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA online application from the Financial Aid office. If you do not have work study awarded to you, you will not be eligible to work under work study positions.

Salt Lake Community College may complete a criminal background check on the finalist.
