Job Summary

The Thayne Center for Service & Learning provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community. The Thayne Center Office Specialist will be key support to achieve these goals. The Office Specialist should be passionate about volunteering and community development.

They will assist in creating collaborative relationships between the Thayne Center and other Student Service departments, and the greater Salt Lake community. Main job responsibilities are to promote Thayne Center programs and articulate the details of volunteer opportunities with SLCC students, faculty, and staff while providing general office support.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

- Assist students, faculty, and staff as they walk in or call the office

- Schedule and staff tables to promote Thayne Center programs and events to the SLCC community

- Talk with students, faculty, and staff about Thayne Center programs and volunteer opportunities.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

- Create Word, Excel, Prezi documents as needed

- Regularly check and respond to email

- General office support including organizing office and office products, filing, and community partner mapping

- Effectively communicate and maintain a regular schedule, including time for meetings with the Administrative Assistant

Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

- Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC’s Financial Aid office.

- Must work at least 4 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester

- Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester

- Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.

- Must be able to earn award at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.

- Must have basic computer skills.

- Attend all related Thayne Center orientations and trainings.

- Excellent oral communication.

- High level of customer service.

-High attention to detail.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Be able to learn about and promote the details of the Thayne Center programs and events

- Familiarity with nonprofits

- Phone etiquette

- Interpersonal skills

- Must be experienced with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Prezi

- Preferred: Ability to speak multiple languages, basic office phone etiquette, filing and organizational skills, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, familiarity with Slack

- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.

- Must have federal work study award through SLCC’s Financial Aid Office to Apply for this job.
- Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.

Work study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work Study program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA application from the Financial Aid Office. If you do not have work study awarded to you, you will not be eligible for work under work study positions.

Salt Lake Community College may complete a criminal background check on the finalist.
