Job Summary

Guadalupe School is a private non-profit which seeks to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and immigrant adults through education. The Adult Education Program utilizes community volunteers to provide small-group instruction in English as a Second Language to low-income immigrant adults.
The Guadalupe School is a tier one community partner of Salt Lake Community College’s Thayne Center for Service and Learning. The Thayne Center for Service & Learning provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community. Though the position will be a direct placement at the Guadalupe School, the Thayne Center for Service and Learning will administer the orientation, enrollment and exit from the Community Work Study program and will act as on-campus supervisor.
The Student Welcome and Engagement Specialist will assist with orienting new students and student goal tracking for transitions to work readiness as well as community involvement opportunities.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

- Conduct one-on-one meetings with Adult Education students regarding goals and community engagement activities.

- Complete administrative tasks relating to student goal data tracking and analysis using Google Forms and Microsoft Excel.

- Compile and distribute resources for community engagement and work preparation opportunities.

- Work collaboratively and share data with both Guadalupe School and United Way of Salt Lake.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred

- Experience with very low-level learners of English a plus

Minimum Qualifications

- Work-study eligible SLCC student

- Proficient in Microsoft Office, internet, e-mail

- Must have compassion and caring for low-income immigrant adults who are seeking to improve their lives through education.

- Punctuality, dependability and organization are absolute musts!

- Must enjoy teamwork and collaboration with colleagues.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Proficient in English and Spanish
- Proficient in basic Microsoft Office programs
- Self-motivated
- Works well with people/volunteers
- Experience working in a clinic or the medical field preferred
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Organized
- Ability to work independently in self-guided environment
- Must be available to work Tuesday and Thursday evenings, other hours negotiable

Work Study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work Study Program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA online application from the Financial Aid office. If you do not have work study awarded to you, you will not be eligible to work under work study positions.

Salt Lake Community College may complete a criminal background check on the finalist.
