Job Summary

Under the direction of the GearUp Coordinator, the GearUp Techician will work with the coordinator, counselors and other staff members in Salt Lake area high schools to offer services and programs for selected students who participate in a federally funded Gear Up program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). The Gear Up Technician will provide outreach, mentoring, counseling, workshops, campus visits and field trips and other support services to low-income students in selected secondary schools to encourage high school graduation and college readiness and access. The GearUp Technician will work with other Gear Up professionals in participating schools to identify and follow up with students and parents to assist with college planning, college application process and scholarship and financial aid applications. The GearUp Technician will enter student data into the Gear Up state-wide computer data base and assist with required grant reporting.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1. Assist the Coordinator and other staff to identify, recruit and select project participants; assess students’ academic needs and develop individual educational plans; assess students’ needs for tutoring and study skills services; monitor student participation; monitor student academic progress toward school success including high school promotion, graduation and college readiness.
2. Plan college readiness and access events and programs for participants and parents; arrange for guest speakers, workshops, field trips, campus visits and summer programs to expose students to career and college opportunities; develop and present workshops and instructional materials for participants and parents on study skills, college options, financial aid and scholarship application procedures.
3. Develop collaborative working relationships with high school personnel.
4. Develop a knowledge of Utah institutions of Higher Education and application requirements; assist high school students with college exploration.
5. Maintain confidential student files; track participation, progress and achievement data.
6. Assist with development of materials and brochures used to communicate with participants.

b. Work well with diverse populations;
c. Assist students in developing college plans and career goals
d. Present workshops for students and parents on careers, college programs and financial aid;
e. Work collaboratively with a variety of school administrations, college and community personnel;
f. Communicate well—in writing and orally;
g. Assist with reports and data collection, maintain student files and collect documentation for services;
h. Work well under pressure;
i. Maintain multiple projects and timelines;
j. Work a flexible schedule which may include occasional evenings and weekends
k. Utilize the college computer system (Banner, Microsoft Office Suite including Presentation, Word, Excel, etc.) in developing tracking mechanisms to measure recruitment effectiveness;
l. Drive to schools and other sites (in the local area as well as throughout the state)

Preferred Qualifications

a. Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral or Social Science, Education, Psychology, Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Business or other human relations discipline;
b. Master’s Degree preferred;
c. Experience in teaching, advising and/or presenting information to large and small groups, and working with diverse populations;
f. Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree
2. Two years related full time work experience
3. Possess a valid Utah Driver’s license and have reliable transportation
4. Must be able to pass a criminal background check

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:
a. The needs of economically and educationally disadvantaged populations and at-risk students;
b. Utah public core curriculum and high school graduation requirements;
c. College programs and degree options;
d. College resources & application procedures (application, registration, catalog, schedule);
e. Computer database and software such as student information systems, Microsoft Office Word, Publisher and presentation media including laptops and LCD projectors;
