Job Summary

In this position, students at Salt Lake Community College will serve as geoscience student researchers. In this capacity, they will receive training in how to conduct scientific research, how to use scientific equipment such as the x-ray fluorescence analyzer, water quality meters, field mapping tablets, scanning electron microscope, GPS and GIS mapping tools. In addition, student will attend career presentations by actual geologists working in the field, meet faculty and attend group meetings at the University of Utah and Weber State geology departments, conduct their own research, and serve as a near-peer mentor for non-science majors. Further, there will be continued support once the student transfers to the University of Utah or Weber State in the form mentoring and scholarship availability. Students agree to participate in the National Science Foundation study that is funding this project.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience doing research.

Demonstrated motivation to learn geology in previous geology classes.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently enrolled as a student at Salt Lake Community College.
Declared a major in Environmental Geology (or plan to declare a major) with plans to transfer to a four-year institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Interested in and excited about:
-learning about geology by “doing” geology in the form of research (often in the field),
-mentoring others in science and geology,
-receiving mentoring from other undergraduate students and faculty.

Special Instructions

Students will work 10-hours per week for up to three semesters.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:
• Have at least one semester remaining at SLCC
• Be pursuing an AS degree in Environmental Geology
• Demonstrate the intention to transfer to a four-year institution to study geology
• Maintain an overall GPA of at least a 2.0 upon receiving an award.
• Students must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.
