Job Summary

TreeUtah is a statewide 501©3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to improve Utah’s quality of life for present and future generations by enhancing the environment through tree planting, stewardship and education.

TreeUtah is a tier three community partner of Salt Lake Community College’s Thayne Center for Service and Learning. The Thayne Center for Service & Learning provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community. Though the position will be a direct placement at the TreeUtah, the Thayne Center for Service and Learning will administer the orientation, enrollment and exit from the Community Work Study program and will act as on-campus supervisor.

The EcoGarden Specialist will manage the EcoGarden, a TreeUtah permaculture orchard located by the Day Riverside Library in Rose Park. This role will be responsible for coordinating volunteer events in the garden and will have freedom and autonomy to beautify the property. Hours are very flexible, but largely during the workweek (M-F, 9-5, with some Saturday mornings). They will also provide general assistance to TreeUtah staff assisting with education and public events.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Self-motivated with gardening experience and/or knowledge
• Serve as a good role model in personal language, appearance and behavior
• Comfortable recruiting and managing groups of volunteers
• Willing to research permaculture and help come up with a long-term maintenance and site plan
• Happy to be a self-starter in a small team

Minimum Qualifications

- Must have a SLCC Federal Work-Study Award
- Must work 16-20 hours a week during the semester.
- Must pass a background check.
- Attend all Thayne Center orientations and trainings related to this program.
- Week day business hours flexibility to work
- Reliable Transportation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Proficient in English
- Proficient in basic Microsoft Office programs
- Self-motivated
- Works well with people/volunteers
- Experience working in community gardening preferred
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Organized
- Ability to work independently in self-guided environment

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.
