Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College is Utah’s largest college with the most diverse student body in the state. It serves more than 60,000 students on 10 campuses, including the eLearning virtual campus. Accordingly, the English Department seeks to attract an active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber, skilled in the scholarship of teaching, discovery, application, and integration of knowledge. The successful applicant will join a vibrant and innovative department as its members are reflective practitioners and knowledgeable teachers in their respective fields. The department is nationally recognized for its award winning Community Writing Center, Student Writing Center, and Developmental Education program.

The department was recently awarded the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence. The English Department faculty include published poets, creative writers, and composition/writing studies scholars.

The department hosts an active publication center, a successful student publication, open education resource curriculum, writing in alternative spaces, and a long-standing student conference committed to writing and social justice, and aims for Engaged Department status, focusing on service learning and civically engaged learning. We are an intellectually diverse department of 42 full-time innovative faculty members with a strong commitment to professional development through scholarship, conference attendance, and affiliation with regional and national organizations such as CCCC, NCTE, and NADE.
Together, the faculty members have expertise in a range of subjects and disciplinary areas, including composition, creative writing, developmental reading and writing, literacy studies, the scholarship of teaching and learning, discourse analysis, literature, critical theory, cultural studies, folklore, gender studies, linguistics, and technical writing. Many of our courses satisfy the institution’s diversity requirement.

The department serves students from a variety of backgrounds that bring to the classroom a wealth of knowledges, languages, and life experiences.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Depending on credentials or experience, teach in such areas as basic writing, college level writing, technical writing, and courses within the department’s degree and certificate programs.

Work with students from diverse backgrounds and literacy practices.

Assess and maintain records of student performance.

Maintain regularly scheduled office/consultation hours.

Serve on department, school, and college-wide committees.

Engage with the larger community.

Demonstrate a professional commitment to the discipline, department, school, and college mission and values.

Share knowledge and engage with the college community, as well as the community at large.

Work collaboratively to design methods for creating/assessing inclusive educational experiences for students.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Expertise in multilingual composition theory and praxis.
2. Demonstrated success in working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds and literacy practices.
3. Demonstrated success in working with multilingual student writers.
4. Demonstrated commitment to improving access to, and retention in, higher education for students from communities traditionally underrepresented in higher education
5. Experience designing and teaching courses focused on digital writing, multimodal/multimedia composing, and the like.
6. The equivalent of 1-3 years of full-time teaching experience in the field at a post-secondary institution.
7. Significant involvement in a campus writing program.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in English/English Studies, Writing Studies, Rhetoric/Composition, Technical and Professional Writing, Basic Writing, Literacy Studies, Linguistics, or a closely related field.
2. Two years of experience teaching basic or transfer-level English composition courses (graduate or adjunct teaching applicable).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Knowledge of course and program assessment best practices preferred.
2. Knowledge of successful curricular design for transitional, first generation student populations, and English language learners preferred.
3. Knowledge of critical educational theories and practices that pursue equity and inclusion for students from underrepresented and historically disenfranchised communities.
4. Knowledge of General Education theory and practice.
5. Preferred proficiency in at least one language other than English.
6. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College. The ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.
