Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is a premiere community college in the western United States and a national leader. The college is increasing its investment in data and analytics and seeks a skilled director to manage the front-line effort. This position leads the effort to build institutional capacity for evidence-based, data-informed planning and decision-making. This includes the development of an institution-wide system for operational and strategic data and information reporting for both front-line personnel and senior leadership. The director is charged with maintaining and developing of a robust institutional research portfolio regarding student success at SLCC. This director directly supervises a talented data analysis and research team.

The director will oversee the strategic development of relevant and timely institutional research and reporting to inform executive and departmental decision-making. The director implements sophisticated statistical and data science techniques to better understand and recommend improvements for enrollment, registration, graduation, and transfer processes. The director will lead research seeking answers to existing questions as well as discovering new questions and answers. His or her research should lead to continued development of standardized reports as appropriate. This position leads the development of the necessary data infrastructure, tools, platforms, processes, and reports to improve organizational decisions through the strategic use of data and information assets.

This position will also cultivate meaningful primary student success research among faculty, departments, and administrative divisions. As the work described above identifies the needs for further primary research, the director oversees the development of research experiments to test the efficacy of proposed initiatives or projects. Designing experiments based on literature in behavioral economics and other disciplines, the director will oversee the design and execution of both small and large-scale improvement experiments, which, if demonstrated successful, can be taken to scale.

This position also oversees the Institutional Review Board at the college. This position is at-will.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Set office culture and provide leadership, direction, and management for the personnel, resources, and processes of Data Science and Analytics office. Hire, train, and supervise supporting personnel, including scheduling, delegating, coordinating and clarifying work. Ensure budget and other college resources are used effectively.

Direct and coordinate sophisticated data science and analytics efforts to improve decisions and outcomes towards strategic goals and front-line initiatives. Work with the assistant vice president in improving access to meaningful strategic data and information to improve student outcomes.

Supervise the planning and execution of primary student success research projects, including providing research reports for college leadership. This also includes working closely with the Office of Sponsored Projects and Principal Investigators to develop research methodology for grants and other projects.

Provide consultation, training and support in research and data analysis/application to College personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD preferred. Some college-level teaching experience preferred.

Experience in community college or educational administration.

Experience with Banner.

Experience with statistical software packages (e.g., Python, R, Stata) and data/report presentation tools (e.g, Tableau, Shiny, Cognos).

Experience in database, data warehouse, or business intelligence system design, query, and reporting.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in public administration, statistics, business, education, educational psychology, or related field.

Five (5) years related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•Leadership and Management: Demonstrated strong supervisory and management skills including directing, mentoring and training staff. A proven history of accepting and giving constructive feedback. Demonstrated ability and experience providing leadership for reporting from data and analytics systems, particularly in assessing, updating, and optimizing data and reporting processes. Ability to think systematically from both an executive and a front-line perspective.

• Data Science and Statistics: Expertise in sophisticated statistical and data science techniques such as forecasting, causal impact analysis, predictive modeling, data mining, and business process optimization. Specifically the ability to create, evaluate, and automate performance indicators and performance metrics for the college and individual departments. Experience with data mining and statistical analysis in an educational environment. Able to understand the various data structures and common methods in data transformation. Knowledge of relational databases and the tools used to query them.

•Primary Research Design: Working understanding of various research methodologies; experience designing, implementing, and successfully completing research projects.

•Effective communication. Ability to provide accurate and meaningful reports in conjunction with visual and narrative data interpretations in written or oral presentations for internal and external target audiences based on research analyses in response to internal and external information needs.

• Collaborative: Collaborate with appropriate offices to initiate, design, conduct, and analyze the results of research studies. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
