Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the High School Recruitment Manager, SLCC College Access Advisors are primarily responsible for ensuring a steady inflow of prepared students in SLCC through the implementation of active and effective recruiting, outreach, and concurrent enrollment academic planning activities. College Access Advisors regularly visit high schools to represent SLCC at various events, assist students with college planning, work with underrepresented students, and work to maintain positive and meaningful relationships with high school personnel and students. Additionally, College Access Advisors manage the student ambassador team and assist with SLCC campus tours.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Under direct supervision of the High School Recruitment Manager, facilitate recruitment plans and efforts involving high school students that affect future enrollments. Initiate and follow-up on contracts with high school head counselors, concurrent enrollment coordinators, and counselors to develop a consistent presence within key and potential feeder schools to increase college readiness and awareness, and assist students in transitioning to SLCC; contact prospects by e-mail, phone, and other communication modalities to encourage and assist with admissions, registration, and transition. Serve as a SLCC and concurrent enrollment resource for students, parents and high school counselors, in assisting high schools with questions and concerns regarding concurrent enrollment rules and processes, and transition to college.
Deliver SLCC and concurrent enrollment presentations to large and small groups at the high schools, at SLCC and within the community to both students, parents, and high school personnel. Maintain a professional SLCC that helps students feel a continued connection to SLCC. Work with underrepresented populations to increase college preparation and attendance.
Advise and track high school concurrent enrollment students, prospective concurrent enrollment students, and prospective SLCC students on college success, college access, and academic planning. Advise and track prospective and concurrent students with appropriate college degree and program information, including admissions, testing, scholarships and financial aid processes in order to facilitate a smooth transition from high school to college attendance. Advisor will track all contacts with students in a recruitment data base.
Program Development: Actively collaborate with high school counseling staff to develop effective ways to assist concurrent and prospective students with college access and college planning. Develop and plan special recruitment and outreach events; supervise and train student leaders; support other staff members in college outreach efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred;

Knowledge of Utah Educational system preferred;

0-2 years related, paid full-time work experience required in dealing with diverse populations in education, social services, or human relations setting;

Higher education experience preferred;


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in areas such as behavioral or social science, education, communications, or other related discipline.
Zero (0) to two (2) years of direct, paid full-time work experience required in dealing with diverse populations in education, social services, or human relations setting; Ability to work a flexible schedule;
Possess a valid driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one.
Ability to drive own vehicle to schools and other sites in the Salt Lake Valley
Ability to lift 20 lbs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Recruitment principles as related to the recruitment of traditional aged high school students;
• Collaboration and facilitation skills;
• College enrollment procedures, financial aid and scholarship application processes;
• Knowledge of concurrent enrollment policies and procedures outlined by the state of Utah, the Utah System of Higher Education, the Utah Board of Education, and SLCC.
• The needs of economically and educationally disadvantaged populations;
• College programs and degree options;
• Educational tests and interpretation;
• Tracking performance and reporting;
• Event planning and delivery of appropriate activities involving prospective students and families;
• Computer database software such as Banner, Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint and presentation media including laptops and LCD projectors.

• Lead discussions and make presentations to large and small groups;
• Plan and manage projects, prioritize assignments and carry to completion;
• Use independent problem solving to analyze issues and create action plans;
• Work collaboratively and professionally with school and community partners;
• Plan and organize small and large recruitment and outreach events both on and off campus;
• Prepare and maintain accurate records;
• Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse population, particularly educationally and economically disadvantaged students and their parents;
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Work well under pressure and independently; learn quickly and adapt to a flexible schedule;
• Utilize pertinent computer software, and internet;
• Work ethically with confidential information;
• Work a flexible schedule to include some evenings and weekends;
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
